According to official information from ISOI, the scientific meeting received more than 150 abstracts and poster submissions and attracted over 300 participants. The forum brought together researchers, academics, students, government representatives, practitioners, and marine industry professionals to exchange knowledge, discuss research findings, and formulate strategic ideas and recommendations for Indonesia’s marine development.
Hosting PIT XXII ISOI marked an important moment for Universitas Udayana, not only as the host institution but also as part of a research ecosystem contributing to the advancement of marine science. The award received by the Director of DPPM represents an achievement that underscores the relevance of academic expertise in advancing research and national maritime development.
The Indroyono Soesilo Award: Recognition of Marine Science Expertise
The Indroyono Soesilo Award recognizes outstanding marine researchers and academics and was presented as part of PIT XXII ISOI 2026. This year, the award was presented to I Gede Hendrawan of Universitas Udayana for his expertise in ocean modelling, and Dr. Rima Rachmayani of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), who was recognized for her expertise in marine geology and paleoceanography.
The recognition of I Gede Hendrawan highlights the importance of ocean modelling in understanding marine dynamics and supporting science-based coastal management. Ocean modelling is a research tool that can help explain changes in marine conditions, improve understanding of ocean–climate interactions, and provide scientific information for marine resource management.
In the context of climate change, monitoring and forecasting ocean conditions are becoming increasingly important. Climate variability, including the El Niño phenomenon, can affect environmental conditions, fish distribution, fishing yields, and the livelihoods of coastal communities. Strengthening oceanographic research, ocean observation, predictive modelling, and the use of scientific data is therefore essential to improving preparedness for environmental change.
This achievement also underscores the strategic value of research expertise when scientific knowledge can inform decision-making and address real-world challenges. For Universitas Udayana, the award provides further motivation to strengthen research quality, scientific collaboration, and the application of research outcomes to sustainable development.
Strengthening DPPM’s Role in Maximizing Research Impact
As the unit responsible for research and community service at Universitas Udayana, DPPM plays a strategic role in fostering a high-quality, collaborative, and impact-oriented research ecosystem. The award received by the Director of DPPM provides an opportunity to further strengthen the university’s research culture, enhance researchers’ capacities, and expand opportunities for collaboration in addressing development challenges.
In marine science, these efforts can be pursued through research supporting coastal management, environmental quality monitoring, climate change studies, marine technology development, and the strengthening of coastal economies. Research findings also need to be communicated in accessible forms so that government agencies, industry stakeholders, communities, and the wider public can use them as a basis for developing solutions that meet practical needs.
PIT XXII ISOI demonstrates how research impact can be expanded through multiple channels, from scientific publications and knowledge exchange to policy recommendations, technology development, and community engagement. Cross-disciplinary and cross-sector collaboration is essential to ensure that scientific knowledge extends beyond academia and contributes to community well-being and ecosystem sustainability.
The Indroyono Soesilo Award received by I Gede Hendrawan, S.Si, M.Si, Ph.D., reinforces the important role of Universitas Udayana academics in advancing marine science in Indonesia. This achievement also encourages further development of research and community service initiatives that address real-world challenges, foster collaboration, and support the sustainable management of marine resources.
Through Universitas Udayana’s hosting of PIT XXII ISOI and the achievements of its academics at the forum, new opportunities are expected to emerge to strengthen research networks, improve the application of research findings, and generate strategic recommendations for maritime development. In this way, marine research can continue to contribute to healthier oceans, stronger food and energy security, and improved livelihoods for Indonesia’s coastal communities.
